Visitors can now scale its unique dome shaped roof for breath-taking views across the city x

Mm do internet search:"prisoner+unmutual". This website is prob now the foremost re data on this hugely influential and mega cult late 1960s TV show. It incl info on the FREE location tours (2 pa in central London and occ ones in Elstree+Borehamwood). The latter, just north of London and the UKs Hollywood, is where most of the series was filmed. The wonderful NW Wales village of Portmeirion was only actually used in 2 "shoots". ...BCNU!

I am absurdly in love with Vienna at that time of1948. And all because this film. Of course it wasn't really like that, it was all rather grim and sordid, but still. Rather extraordinary to see 'that' doorway at 3:57 and be up on the Ferris wheel. Anyone I ask that goes to Vienna, has no idea what i'm talking about sadly. Thanks for sharing this Karin

Excellent summary! One of the most interesting, perhaps bizarre, articles I've ever read about the film is "When Harry met Holly" (2007) by Djamel Zeniti, in which he argues the various film locations form a geometric sequence.

Technical note: While there is a monument to Mozart in Vienna's central cemetery, he is not buried there. He is buried in Cimetière Saint Marc, which is no longer in use. No one knows where his grave is, however, as it was unmarked and later Constanze, his widow, couldn't remember where the site was. So for the Central Cemetery they erected a lovely monument to Mozart, but he is not there.

It was originally pushed on the steep section by a rack-and-pinion locomotive, similar if not identical to the one that pushed the trams of the Renon railway, Alto Adige / South Tyrol. In Trieste the rack railway was replaced by the current funicular, while access to the Renon plateau is currently via an aerial cableway. The flat section is still in service. At the Innsbruck tram museum there is an example of the aforementioned rack locomotive used for pushing

Very funny video. You had a great way of presenting it. I managed to locate several locations on my first trip to Vienna 10 years ago much to my partners annoyance as she hadn't seen the movie. Even though she lived there for about a year, as a result of location searching I took her to places she hadn't been (whiich she did appreciate), such as the church where part of the chase scene was and the place where cat snuggles up to Welles' legs. You showed me some new places. Maybe next time I'll go visit them. Thanks.

The Third Man has always been one of my favourite films. When I did my National Service in the Australian Air Force, I had a friend who was one of identical triplets. He loved to proclaim “i’m the Third Man!” The first time I visited Vienna I felt I had to ride in the Reiserad, the big wheel although I am normally afraid of heights. It didn’t matter, I was up there imagining I was with Harry and Holy.

Charming, witty, unique short doc on The Third Man. You forgot to mention though that Orson Welles' scenes in the sewer were not shot in Vienna. Welles took one whiff and said no thanks. He told Reed and Korda he would only film his sewer scenes on a set so they constructed a partial sewer set back in London for Welles' benefit.

  • @kevinjones4559

Technically the 'sewer' isn't a sewer but a buried river. There would a substantial whiff from the open sewer which I don't think the Viennese would allow for long.
